Traffic in big cities and the huge amount of roads traveled daily is one of the major environmental problems and challenges of today. Since countries around the globe are getting more and more roads, a Dutch company has found a way to make them more sustainable by transforming road noise barriers into solar panels.
The Heijmans project is scheduled to start in 2018, using a motorway as a simulator for this project, which can revolutionize the way in which communication routes are faced by construction companies. Thus, along two kilometers of this Dutch motorway will be installed 68 solar panels that, according to the estimates, will produce energy to supply about 50 dwellings.
For now the project is only in the experimental phase, but if this option proves economically viable the Dutch government may demonstrate willingness to extend this initiative to other roads in the country.
